Western democracies are experiencing urgent threats of democratic backsliding and violent political extremism. What role do changes in *moral and social norms* play in these processes, and how can we best study this? This workshop seeks to bring together leading scholars who are advancing methods, concepts and theories to address these questions. It will focus on experimental approaches to measuring and conceptualizing social and moral norms, as well as assessing their causal effects on democracy, political violence, and conflict. The workshop is jointly organized by two projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council: one led by Professor Sirianne Dahlum on democratic norms and another led by Professor Tore Wig on norms and political violence.

We invite papers on topics such as (but not limited to):

  • Measuring and manipulating social or moral norms;
  • Norms relating to democratic backsliding;
  • Norms relating to political violence;
  • Theoretical and conceptual approaches to norms in politics;
  • Analyzes of changes in norms, with effects on political outcomes, or the origins of moral and social norms.

Organizers: Tore Wig, Sirianne Dahlum and Daniel Goldstein

Deadline for the submission of proposals: 15 February 2025

Travel and Accommodation:

The workshop will run from June 16-17, and the organizers will cover all joint expenses, including meals (we will have joint dinners both days). There will be some (but limited) funds available to cover accommodation and travel expenses.
