It is the high politics that is creating such an ambivalence. Japan and Australia may also join the alliance to fight the Chinese, in case they launch a physical assault. America is massively supplying state-of-the art arms and equipment to the Taiwan's military forces. Taiwan is a practicing democracy and its look like Taiwanese are not interested to reintegrate with mainland China.  There are stakes over the production of semi-conductors, for which Taiwan has the best and finest foundry.
